This work challenges widely accepted representation of the American forefathers (such as Thomas Jefferson in this case) by allowing the audience to engage in their own quest of discovery of their "means of support" conveyed through a connect-the-dot technique. The audience discovers that Thomas Jefferson's means of support were his many slaves, as many African american faces are hidden in the painting.
